About This Project

As a part of the recently approved Master Plan for Coastal Carolina University, the Open Space and Parking plans were a part of an effort to relocate parking and traffic lanes from the center of campus – in this case, the highly visible corner of US Highway 501 and University Drive has been transformed into natural and useful spaces.

The Open Space provides for ample green areas intended for passive and active use, including a 9-Hole Disc Golf Course, permeable walking paths, and benches.  New canopy trees are strategically placed in context with tentative locations of future classroom buildings as identified in the Master Plan, so as to hopefully avoid the removal existing trees – protecting and replenishing an already mature canopy for the future.

The parking area takes advantage of the adjacent Open Space walking paths and University shuttle service for connectivity to campus. Thoughtful coordination and design of the paved area’s drainage system utilizes best management practices, directing stormwater into special, planted detention areas allowing groundwater to recharge onsite.

Environmental Concepts’ services included: Site Planning, Tree Protection and Mitigation Plans, Course Routing and Grading Plans for the Disc Golf Course, Planting, Irrigation, and Site Lighting Plans.
